Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
